Laboratory practice

AASHTO R 47

Purpose: AASHTO R 47 reduces a large asphalt mixture sample to the smaller portions needed for laboratory tests.
What it covers: The practice uses controlled splitting or quartering so each test portion represents the original mixture.
Why it matters: Poor sample reduction can separate coarse and fine material and create a test result that does not represent the sampled mixture.
Important detail: The goal is not simply a smaller sample. The laboratory must preserve the mixture proportions while obtaining the required test size.
This overview is a simple introduction. Use the current AASHTO R 47 practice and the sample size requirements of the test being performed.
